The basics

What's that?

A port of Tony Hawk's Underground (PC, 2003) that keeps the original game alive on modern Windows, macOS and Linux.

On top of that come the quality-of-life upgrades it always deserved: optional remastered graphics, proper keyboard and gamepad settings, screen and sound options, and online play, with GameSpy reincarnated as THUG Online. Think of it as a fresh set of bearings, not a new board.

Did you change the physics or gameplay?

No, and we won't. Every trick, every balance meter and every slam you remember works exactly like it did in 2003. If your muscle memory says it should land, it lands. If it says you'll eat concrete, you'll eat concrete.

Do I need my own copy of the game?

Yes. For legal reasons we don't provide the full game. The patch is a few megabytes of new code and scripts; the levels, skaters, music and movies come from the copy you own. No copy, no skating. Check the attic, the garage, or that box labelled “CDs, do not throw away”.

Is it free?

Completely. No ads, no store and no affiliation with Activision or Neversoft. You paid for the game in 2003; that still counts.

Where can I read more about the port?

It's all on thug.epicmaxim.net: installation, controls, every setting, the remaster layer, languages and how online works under the hood.

Getting it running

Which copy works, and how do I install it?

The PC release from 2003. Install it, download the patch for your system, unzip it into the game folder (the one with THUG.exe and Data) and say yes to every “replace?”. Then run it.

Installed under Program Files? Copy the game folder somewhere you own first, like Documents: the game keeps its saves and settings right next to itself.

What do I need to run it?
  • Windows: 64-bit Windows 10 or newer, OpenGL 3.3.
  • macOS: 11 or newer, Apple Silicon or Intel.
  • Linux: x64, glibc 2.35 or newer, X11 or Wayland.

If your computer can open a browser tab, it can probably grind a rail.

My computer says the app is unsafe. Is it?

The builds aren't signed (certificates cost money; skateboards cost money too). On macOS, open it once, then allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security (“Open Anyway”). On Windows, SmartScreen may ask: More info › Run anyway. Only download the patch from this site.

Can I play with a controller?

Yes. Xbox, PlayStation and most other controllers work, with the THUG Xbox layout and vibration. Every button can be changed in Options › Gamepad, and keyboard and pad work at the same time, so nobody has to fight over the couch.

My keys feel weird. Where's the camera button?

The default is the retail PC layout: numpad for tricks, WASD to move, P to change the camera (Enter opens the chat online). Everything can be rebound in Options › Keyboard, and Reset to Defaults is always one click away. No numpad? Rebind, or plug in a pad.

Where are my saves and settings?

Next to the game: saves in save/, settings in config.ini. Back them up like they're your best combo.

Online & stats

Do I need an account to play online?

No. You can drop in as a guest and play right away. A profile is what you need for stats, ranks and the homie list.

How do stats work?

Register a GameSpy profile from THUG Online in the game, and save your Net profile so you don't have to log in every time.

Then play ranked games: your best scores and combos on the twelve ranked levels go into the online lists, your rating climbs, and your deck fills up from rank 0 to 10. Cheats are fun, but games played with them don't count.

Can I play with friends on other systems?

Yes. Windows, macOS and Linux players share the same lobbies and games. The bowl doesn't care what operating system you run.

Do I need to open ports on my router?

No. THUG Online connects players through NAT punch-through, so hosting usually just works. LAN play works too, for the ones who still own a switch and three long cables.

I found a bug. Now what?

Mail [email protected] with your system, what you did, what happened, and your config.ini. Screenshots are gold. “It doesn't work” is a mystery novel we can't finish.

The story

What's the story behind it?

It all started as a big project to bring THUG back online and give it a modern gameplay experience.

Built under constant ballistic missile strikes and shelling by a neighbouring communist country, in downtown Kyiv .

F#CK COMMUNISTS!
